Q. What is ALEH’s annual budget?

. ALEH’s operating budget for all four facilities is about $30 million. The Israeli government provides 85% of that sum, while the rest is fundraised by ALEH through private contributions. This amount does not include capital development projects, which receive 50% funding from the government.

Q. How much does it cost to care for one ALEH child?

A. It costs  approximately $4,100 per month to care for each child living at ALEH. This includes medical and caregiving services, rehabilitation and therapy, schooling, specialized equipment, food, clothing, and hygiene maintenance.

Cost of care for our highly dependent children, with their complex medical conditions, is about $5000 per month.

Q. Is ALEH affiliated with any medical institutions?

A. Each ALEH facility is affiliated with a hospital in the region. Senior staff and pediatric specialists in Tel HaShomer Hospital, Shaare Zedek Medical Center, Hadassah Ein Kerem, and Soroka Medical Center in Beer Sheva enable ALEH to provide its children with the highest level and latest methods of care both on a daily basis and in situations where medical complications arise.

Q. Are the parents of ALEH children involved in their children’s everyday lives?

A. Parents and families are actively encouraged to visit ALEH whenever they want, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and to be personally involved in their child’s development.  The organization offers counseling services and support to families, and its social workers work as liaisons between families and staff. ALEH also runs numerous family-oriented events throughout the year at which parents and siblings can enjoy their child’s company in a fun, supportive atmosphere. An annual march, holiday celebrations, and an end-of-year school outing are just some of the many integrative social events to which families are invited and encouraged to attend.

Furthermore, via technological avenues such as Skype and an ambitious iPad project, children from ALEH are able to maintain an ongoing relationship with their families and share daily events with them.

Q. Doesn’t the Israeli government or its national health provider give children with disabilities the care and assistance they need?

A. While government funding covers the bulk of ALEH’s operating expenses, ALEH is determined to provide more intensive therapy and medical services than are funded by the relevant government ministries. This is especially important considering that our children have multiple, severe disabilities that require a more intensive therapy program than the typically allotted hours.

ALEH also provides a higher ratio of caregivers per child in order to give our children the individualized quality care they require. Additionally, various innovative rehabilitative programs, outings, and custom-designed therapy equipment all require private fundraising.

Q. Are there any other organizations that provide similar services? What is unique about ALEH?

A. ALEH is Israel’s largest organization caring for children with multiple severe disabilities whose complex physical and cognitive complications require support for all basic functions.  The organization’s network currently cares for over 700 children and young adults. Similar organizations refer their most complex cases to ALEH.

In addition, ALEH is unique in that it meets all of its children’s needs: residential, supportive, educational, therapeutic, rehabilitative, and social activities within a medically safe environment – 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

ALEH’s programs provide children and their families a framework for life – from infancy through adulthood, including hospice care. The framework includes Early Intervention, Kindergarten, School, Vocational Programs and Assisted-Living Homes for adults.

Q. Are contributions to ALEH tax-deductible?

A. Donations to ALEH are recognized as tax deductible in Israel, the USA, the UK and Canada.

Q. Why did ALEH build a rehabilitative village in the Negev?

A. First, ALEH Negev – Nahalat Eran provides rehabilitative services to the entire Negev population, which suffers from a tremendous shortage of paramedical, therapeutic and special education services.

Second, the Negev offers space, freedom and a sense of well-being that cannot be duplicated in major cities. This is a tremendous advantage for young adults with severe disabilities.

Third, ALEH Negev contributes significantly to the growth of the economy in the Negev region by offering over 500 employment opportunities in a large variety of fields.

Q. Who are your active board members?

A. ALEH has a committed board comprised of community activists and prominent business people.  Among the high-profile board members are Major General (Res) Doron Almog, Chairman of ALEH Negev; Rabbi Shmuel Rabinowitz, Rabbi of the Western Wall; Mrs. Johanna Arbib, former Chair of the World Board of Trustees at Keren Hayesod; and Major General Benny Ganz, former Chief of General Staff of the IDF – all of whom are personally acquainted with ALEH and in close contact with its administration.

Q. How do ALEH’s hospital wings differ from hospital care?

A. At ALEH, children with complex medical conditions are able to live in warm, home-like surroundings that are completely different from a hospital environment. Their caregivers and nurses remain the same familiar faces, their rooms are decorated and designed like a home, and care is given in an individualized and warm manner.

In addition, daily life continues uninterrupted. Children who would otherwise be lying in a hospital bed are able to continue to attend school, receive therapy and participate in daily activities while receiving the complex medical care they require.
