In 1982, a group of parents made a decision that would ultimately revolutionize life for Israel’s disability community: They would do everything possible to give their severely disabled children the best available care and the opportunity to grow and develop to their fullest capabilities. With great determination, they rented an apartment, hired a special education teacher and solicited a group of dedicated volunteers to assist them in fulfilling their goal. From these humble beginnings, ALEH was formed.
This unique approach and steadfast commitment has since changed the face of rehabilitative care in Israel. Today, over 700 children with intellectual and developmental disabilities and physical handicaps receive state-of-the-art medical, educational and rehabilitative care in ALEH’s four facilities. In addition, ALEH provides thousands of outpatient treatments annually. Without ALEH, many of these children would be forced to spend their lives in hospitals, with no opportunities for rehabilitation, education, and the love and warmth of a home.
Thanks to ALEH, these children are able to live in much the same way as nondisabled children. They attend school, participate in vocational programs, and enjoy activities such as swimming at the beach or touring Israel’s beautiful sites. In its efforts to change common attitudes and create a more caring and inclusive society in Israel, ALEH has developed numerous Tikkun Olam programs involving families, schoolchildren, university students, the IDF, and hundreds of volunteers both in Israel and abroad.
ALEH believes that all individuals, regardless of the severity of their physical or cognitive disabilities, have the right to benefit from the best available care in order to reach their full potential.
ALEH is dedicated to offering them a comprehensive solution – including residential, medical, rehabilitative, educational and social services – in a dignified, warm and loving atmosphere that recognizes them as individuals with abilities, feelings and needs shared by all human beings.
